NEWHAM CLEANS UP WITH TOP AWARD FOR TACKLING LITTER
A TOP AWARD has been scooped by Newham Council’s enforcement officers for their outstanding work in tackling litter.
Clean Highways, an independent campaign for cleaner streets and highways, highlighted Newham after it issued 8,865 on-the-spot fines for littering in 2011/12.
The award went to the council’s Enforcement & Safety Division, Neighbourhood Operations team.
Cllr Unmesh Desai, Executive Member for Crime and Anti-Social Behaviour, said: “This is a richly-deserved recognition of the stunning success our enforcement officers have achieved in keeping the Olympic borough’s street clean and tidy. It confirms what we have known all along – that when it comes to dealing with litter, we are the top performing borough.
“Newham spends more than £11m a year on cleaning our streets, waste and recycling. We recovered £369,255 from fixed penalty notices issued by our enforcement team in the last financial year.
“We are acting because our residents want us to make this a top priority. We make no apology for tackling littering which is anti-social behaviour.
“We want to change behaviour so that a minority do not spoil a borough that we want everyone to take pride in. We want to make Newham a place where people want to live, work and stay. This means everyone must play their part.”

“Here in Newham, we don’t rest on our laurels so we will be pushing even harder to improve those figures still further next year.”
